死ぬところだったーThe 43rd day of my stay in Australiaー

オーストラリア生活４３日目。この日は以前取得したダイビングのライセンスから、もう１ランク上のライセンスを取得するための講習に行きました。そこでタンクの空気がなくなり、大パニック！インストラクターさんの冷静な対応によって、無事海中から帰還することができました。今回のテーマは「死ぬところだった！」でいきましょう。

May 14thーThe 43rd day of my stay in Australiaー
I went to Chowder Bay to take part in a diving lesson with my friends. We practiced tying up things with a rope and floating the things from the bottom of the sea. We also learned how to use a compass in the sea. In this practice, I ran out the air of the tank on my back. I was in a panic in that moment. I conveyed a SOS message with the gesture of what I learned for additional air. One of our instructors realized me and gave me air from my friends' tank. The instructor and my friend helped me out of the dangerous situation. 
I couldn't see any fish, but saw the heaven. I was grateful to them. In the end, The lesson led me to Advanced Open Diver license.

「〜しかけた」という英語。パッと思いつきますか？「死にかけた！」だけではないハズです。他にも「スマホ落としかけた」「カメラを落として壊しかけた」など、いろいろなシチュエーションで「ギリギリセーフ！」があると思います。今回はその表現を追加して、日記をBrush Upしていきたいと思います！

「死ぬところだった！」ーピンチを強調する表現ー

I almost died by suffocation in the sea. I was near death a couple of times in my life, but it was my first time that I got choked up. 「海の中窒息で死にかけました。人生で死にかけたことは何度かありますが、窒息したのは初めてです。」

Fortunately, I was able to come back to the land. I had a brush with death. 「幸運にも、私は陸に戻ることができました。私は死を覚悟するような体験をしました。」

爆笑するーThe 44th day of my stay in Australiaー

オーストラリア生活４４日目。来週に去る予定のシェアメイトのため、みんなでお別れパーティを実施しました。片方の鼻を閉じ、鼻息だけでロウソクの火を何個消せるか選手権が開催され、パーティは大盛り上がり！国籍を問わず、面白いものは面白いんだ！と感じました。今回のテーマは「爆笑する」でいきましょう！

May 14thーThe 44th day of my stay in Australiaー
I had a barbecue party tonight because many of my friends in this house were supposed to leave next week. We went to a grocery store, then bought some grilled onions and beaf. In the party, we took a lot of pictures while eating barbecue meat. In addition, it was one of my friends' birthday. We celebrated her birthday with a chocolate cake. Sunny, the owner of the house, arranged candles in a line and closed one of his nostril. He tried to put out the fire on the candles with just one nostril. It was so funny. We laughed too much.

「爆笑した！」を英語で言えますか？

When we saw him trying to put out the fire, we burst out laughing. I remember there's always explosions of laughter in our house. I'm sure I will miss them after they leave. 「彼がロウソクの火を消そうとするとき、私たちは爆笑だった。思えばシェアハウス内にはいつも爆笑があった。彼らが去った後、寂しくなります。」

I broke into a laugh today. I was tired because I laughed too much. 「今日は爆笑しました。笑いすぎて疲れました。」

酔うーThe 45th day of my stay in Australiaー

オーストラリア生活４５日目。乗り物酔いなど、それほど縁がない人生でしたが、人生最大に酔った事件パート１です。ダイビングを楽しむハズが、ポイントまでに船酔い。吐き気と頭痛で戦闘不能の状態になりました。ところで「酔う」にもいろいろありますね。今回のテーマは「酔う」で学習していきましょう。

May 15thーthe 45th day of my stay in Australiaー

I took part in a diving lesson at Blue Fish Point. On the way to the diving point, I felt seasick. Though I enjoyed the boat ride and took photos, in 10 minutes, all I could do was just to lie down on the seat. 
Later when I was in the sea, I didn't feel seasick. I came back to normal. The depth we dived in the sea today was 18 meters down. I didn't learn any new skills today. We just enjoyed diving and seeing many fish. Today I was able to see a small shark. It was so exciting.

人生初の船酔いでした。乗り物酔いに強いという自信はこの日に消え去りました。乗り物酔いに対する中身が追加されると、「船酔い」の経験が引き立つかもしれません。

I had never got motion sickness before I came to Australia. I don't usually get carsickness, even if I get a looping roller coaster. I had high confidence in it. But I got seasick on the boat ride today. I was shocked by it. 「オーストラリアに来る前は乗り物酔いになったことはありませんでした。１回転するジェットコースターに乗っても、たいてい酔いはしません。ケッコー自信がありましたが、今日はボートで船酔いしました。私はショックでした。」

様々な「酔う」の英語表現

日記中のSeasick 形「船酔いした」以外にも、いろいろな「酔う」があります。

*get drunk「(お酒に)酔う」
I got really drunk on wine last night. 「昨晩はワインで相当酔った」

*hangover 名「二日酔い」
I had a terrible hangover. 「私はひどい二日酔いだった。」

*carsickness *motion sickness 名「乗り物酔い」
I get motion sickness easily. 「私は乗り物酔いになりやすい。」

*airsickness 名「飛行機酔い」
Please bring me some medicine for airsickness. 「飛行機酔い用の薬を持って来てください。」

いかがだったでしょうか。いろんな「酔う」がありますが、英語では「酔う」に応じて使い分けるようです。*spacesick「宇宙酔い」なんて英単語が一般的に使われる未来も、スグそこまで来ているかもしれませんね。

和製英語ーThe 46th day of my stay in Australiaー

オーストラリア生活46日目。この日は友達とカーペットを探しに放課後シドニーの街へ買い物に行きました。ところで「デパート」って和製英語なんですね。今回のテーマは「和製英語パート２」でいきましょう。

May 16th ーThe 46th day of my stay in Australiaー
I still felt seasick this morning. I managed to go to school and take part in English lessons. In today's class, I was able to repeat what my teacher said better than the previous lesson the previous lesson. It made me forget the seasickness.
After the lesson, I went looking for a nice carpet with my friend. Though we couldn't find a good one, we enjoyed walking through department stores.

*forget 動「～を忘れる」

良いカーペットを探し回った結果見つからなかったのを深めて英語で表現すると、以下のように向上できるかと思います。「歩き回る」という表現を新たに見ていきましょう。

We gave up looking for a good carpet. We just roamed around the department stores. We didn't know what we wanted. We just enjoyed wandering the department stores. 「私たちはカーペットを探すのを諦めて、ただデパートをさまよいました。何がほしいかは分からないまま、デパートをさまようのを楽しみました。」

We enjoyed going on a walkabout. We talked about our future after our working holiday finishes. 「私たちは散策を楽しみました。ワーホリ後の将来について話しました。」

ワールド・スクウェアーThe 47th day of my stay in Australiaー

オーストラリア生活４７日目。散髪用のハサミを探しに友達と街へ繰り出しました。この日は特に、シドニーのワールド・スクエアという複合型ショッピングセンターで買い物を楽しみました。今回のテーマは「複合型ショッピングセンター・World Squareとは！」でいきましょう！

May 17thーthe 47th day of my stay in Australiaー
After taking part in English lessons, I went looking for a pair of scissors to cut my hair with my friend. First, we went to Woolworth. She seemed she had not hoped I could find a good one. It meant she was making fun of me. Before leaving Woolworth, I asked a shop assistant if she knew some good shops where we would find a good pair of scissors for cutting hair. She gave us good information, then we went to World Square and found a good one in the end. We had a good time.
I cut my hair myself with the new scissors that I bought today. I was afraid of cutting my hair because I never cut my hair myself in my life, but I was able to cut my hair better than I had expected.

シドニー中心地付近での生活が始まり、友達とゆっくり買い物をしました。World Square Shopping centerの描写がもっとあればいいですね。複合型ショッピングセンターを歩いて、散髪用のハサミを探すというシュールな目的はさておき、やはり本やに行って日本の漫画の英語バージョンを発見したり、可愛いTシャツを発見するのが楽しい１日でした。

We found a vintage clothing store named Superdry. I had actually seen many people wearing the T-short with Japanese letters on it since I came to Australia. We finally figured out the place where they get one. 
「スーパードライという名前のビンテージの服屋を見つけました。実際オーストラリアに来てから、日本語が書かれたTシャツを着ている人をたくさん見てきました。ついにどこで手に入れるのかが判明しました。」 

We realized that we can get everything we need in the shopping center. When we want some books, we can get some. When we need a medicine, we can get one. Whenever we need something, we can get what we want with easy access. World Square covers an entire Sydney CBD block, with entries on George, Liverpool, Pitt and Goulburn streets. World Square is just a short walk from Town Hall, Museum and Central railway stations.
「私たちは必要なものは全てワールド・スクエアで手に入ることがわかりました。本が欲しい時は本があるし、薬が欲しい時も買えます。何かが欲しいときはいつでも、容易なアクセスで欲しいものが手に入ります。ジョージストリート、リバプールストリート、ピットストリート、そしてグルバーンストリートからの入り口があり、ワールド・スクエアはCBDのブロック全体をカバーしています。」

シドニーの複合型ショッピングセンターWorld・Squareとは！

Sydenyのワールドスクエアは、ジョージ・ストリート、リバープール・ストリート、ピッツ・ストリート、グルバーン・ストリートの4つの通りに囲まれています。

ちなみに、日本で言う地下階がLower Ground Level、1階がUpper Ground Level、そして2階がLevel1と表示されています。

ファッションで目を引くのはSuperdryというブランド。街中で「Superdry極度乾燥しなさい」というロゴの入ったTシャツを着ている人がケッコーいますね。日本語が表記されている海外ブランドが人気というのは嬉しいものです。

シドニーのワールド・スクエアにあるSuperdryの営業時間は以下の通り。夕方４時に閉まるのがオーストラリア！という感じがしますね。日本の働き方改革が進むのを切に願います。

ワールド・スクエア内には日本発の「やよい軒」を始め、お寿司、ラーメンなど日本食を楽しめるレストランもあります。ランチやディナーを楽しむのもアリ、求人情報を探すのもアリです。ワーホリの成功の鍵を握るエリアになるかもしれませんね。

ワールド・スクウェア２ーThe 48th day of my stay in Australiaー

オーストラリア生活48日目。ルームシェアが始まって2週間。ずっと自分用に使っていたお箸がシェアメイトのものだと判明しました。自分用のお箸を探しに、急遽昨日行った複合型ショッピングセンターWorld Squareに友達を連れて行ってきました。ということで、今回のテーマは「複合型ショッピングセンターWorld Square２」でいきたいと思います。

May 18th ーThe 48th day of my stay in Australiaー
I had been using the same pair of chopsticks for more than 2 weeks. I didn't know that the chopsticks belonged to Gill, which meant I had to buy ones for myself. I asked one of my friends to go shopping for new chopsticks with me, then we went to World Square even though we went there yesterday. We found good ones and bought them.
I also bought a cup of coffee for her as a token of my gratitude.
After the shopping, I went to a library to study English with Gill, then I met one of my Japanese friends there. She looked like she was feeling down and she told me why, so I wrote a letter to her. I hope the letter cheered her up.

World Square内にはアジアン・グッズや食品が揃うスーパーがあり、今回はそこでお箸を購入しました。お箸だけではなく、インスタントラーメンや日本食風の調味料なども一緒に購入しました。

There is an Asian supermarket in the World Square. We can find not only chopsticks but Asian food and condiments. They attracted me so bad. Anyway, I bought a pair of chopsticks that I liked. 
「ワールド・スクエア内にはアジア人向けのスーパーがあります。お箸だけでなくアジア食品や調味料を見つけられます。それらがとても魅力的でした。とにかく気に入ったお箸を購入しました。」 

The 49th day of my stay in Australia

オーストラリア生活４９日目。この日は”L”の発音が上手くいかず、意気消沈。元気を出すために、この日久しぶりに自炊しました。スーパーで野菜を買って、大好きな焼き飯にして食べました。そこで今回のテーマは「焼き飯」でいきたいと思います！ちなみに焼き飯の種類や作り方など、英語で言えますか？

May 19thーthe 49th day of my stay in Australiaー
In today's third English lesson, I lost my confidence to listen to what my teacher said. In addition, I found it difficult to pronounce L sound. I was very disappointed in my English. I thought I had to practice it more. 
After the lessons, I went to Woolworth to look for something useful with my friend. We enjoyed chatting away with each other and looking for some household utensils. I bought some vegetables, too.
I cooked fried rice tonight with the vegetables that I bought today. It was so delicious, so I overate it. I had wanted to eat vegetables since I started living the house.

焼き飯・チャーハンの作り方 In English

Fried rice is ・・・
Fried rice is Chinese food, but it is also a favorite dish for Japanese people. We have some kinds of styles like Japanese-style fried rice, fried rice wrapped in eggs and so on. Ramen shops usually serve many kinds of fried rice. It is one of Japanese soul foods. 
「焼き飯は中華料理ですが、日本人にとってもお気に入りの料理です。いろんな種類のスタイルがあり、日本風の焼き飯、卵で包まれた焼き飯など無限にあります。ラーメン屋さんがたいてい多数種類の焼き飯を提供します。日本人のソウルフードの１つです。」

How to make fried rice
(1) First, cut carrots, onions and pepper. 
「最初に、にんじん、玉ねぎ、ピーマンを切ります。」＊個人的にはピーマン入れるのがおススメ！
(2) Warm a flying pan and put oil in it. 
「フライパンを温めて、油を入れます。」
(3) Put the vegetables and pork in the pan and fry them.
「野菜と豚肉をフライパンに入れて、炒めます。」 
(4) Put rice in the pan and fry them all.
「お米をフライパンに入れて、すべて炒めます。」
(5) Put eggs in the pan.
「卵を入れます。」
(6)Season the rice with salt and petter. Put soy sauce or oyster sauce on it. 
「塩コショウで味付けします。醤油かオイスターソースを入れます。」
